The city of Del Rio, population 48,145, is located 2 hours from San Antonio on the Texas-Mexico border between El Paso and Laredo, Texas, and across the Rio Grande from its Mexican neighbor, Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila (population 148,669).  Del Rio is home to Laughlin Air Force Base, the busiest pilot training base in the United States Air Force.   Del Rio is a freight switching point on the Union Pacific main line. Through its sister city relationship with Acuña, Del Rio acts as the principal U.S. Gateway to the state of Coahuila.  Coahuila is a major manufacturing center, part of the growing Texas-Mexico automotive manufacturing cluster, including major Chrysler and General Motors assembly plants.  Coahuila is also Mexico’s top coal state, with about 95% of Mexico's coal reserves. As of 2005, Coahuila’s economy represents 3.5%, or about $22 billion, of Mexico’s GDP. Coahuila's economy has a strong focus on export oriented manufacturing, which employs over 220,000 people.
